Counting has been suspended at the Limerick count centre until 9am, when the Adare/Rathkeale count will resume.

Seamus Browne (SF), Francis Foley (FF) and John Sheahan (FG) have all been elected in the Newcastle West electoral without reaching the quota following the seventh and final count.

With 36 of the 40 seats filled, the state of the parties, as it stands, is Fianna Fail (11), Fine Gael (11), Sinn Fein (5), Labour (3) Anti-Austerity Alliance (3) and Independents (3)

It’s been a busy 60 minutes with six candidates securing election at the Limerick Count centre.

Emmett O’Brien (Ind) and Tom Neville (FG) were elected following the first count in Adare/Rathkeale. The count has been suspended until 9am on Monday.

In Limerick city east, four candidates were elected without reaching the quota following the fifteenth and final count. They are Michael Sheahan (FG), Elena Secas (Lab), Marian Hurley (FG) and Jerry O’Dea (FF).

Earlier, Cllr Leo Walsh was eliminated after “nothing of a material nature” emerged following a full recount.

With 33 of the 40 seats filled, the state of the parties, as it stands, is Fianna Fail (10), Fine Gael (10), Sinn Fein (4), Labour (3) Anti-Austerity Alliance (3) and Independents (3)

There’s nothing new to report at the UL Arena. Counting is continuing in Adare/Rathkeale and Newcastle West while the result of the recount in Limerick city east is awaited.

10PM:

The counting of votes in Adare/Rathkeale has begun with the results of first count expected sometime around 11pm. The recount in Limerick city east is continuing with no indication yet as to when it is likely to be completed.

Meanwhile, it’s been a busy hour or so in the Newcastle West electoral area.

Michael Collins (FF) and Liam Galvin (FG) were elected following the third count while Stephen Goulding (Lab) was eliminated following the fourth count. His surplus of 759 votes are now being distributed.

Subject to the Limerick city east recount, hte state of the parties, as it stands, is Fianna Fail (9), Fine Gael (7), Sinn Fein (4), Labour (2) Anti-Austerity Alliance (3) and Independents (2)

The counting of votes in Limerick city west has concluded.

Daniel Butler (FG) was elected following the twelfth count while Malachy McCreesh (SF),John Loftus (AAA) and Sean Lynch (FF) were elected following the thirteenth count without reaching the quota.

7.50PM

No candidate has been elected following the second count in the Newcastle West electoral area. Sean O’Mahony(Ind), Joe Harrington (AAA) and John Leahy (FF) have been eliminated and their votes are being distributed.

With 25 of the 40 council seats filled, the state of the parties, as it stands, is Fianna Fail (8), Fine Gael (6), Sinn Fein (4), Labour (2) Anti-Austerity Alliance (3) and Independents (2)

7.25PM

A full recount is to take place in Limerick city east following a request from Cllr Leo Walsh (FG). Cllr Walsh made the request following the fourteenth count which left him facing elimination.

The gap between Cllr Walsh and Sarah Jane Hennelly (Ind) stood at just eight votes following the fourteenth count.

Speaking at the count centre after the recount was confirmed, Deputy Kieran O’Donnell said: “The margin is so close that one has to look for a recount”.

The recount is expected to take a number of hours.

No candidate has been elected following the eleventh count in Limerick city west. Richie Ryan (Ind) has been eliminated and his 541 votes are now being distributed.

Another outgoing councillor - Tomás Hannon (Lab) - has lost his seat the #LimerickCount. He has been eliminated following the tenth count in Limerick city west. His 461 votes are now being distributed.

Former Mayor and outgoing councillor, Jim Long (FG), has lost his seat after he was eliminated following the ninth count in Limerick city west. His 364 votes are now being distributed.

Cllr Jerome Scanlan has topped the poll and has been elected following the first count in the Newcastle West area. His surplus is now being distributed.

There have been two more counts here at the #LimerickCount. No candidate has been elected following the eighth count in Limerick city west. Felim Cronin (FG) has been eliminated and his 302 votes are now being distributed.

In Limerick city east, no candidate was elected following the thirteenth count. As there are just eight votes between Sarah Jane Hennelly (Ind) and Leo Walsh (FG), Shane Clifford’s (FF) surplus of 10 votes is being distributed.

No candidate has been elected following the seventh count in Limerick city west. Cathal McCarthy (Ind) has been eliminated and his 265 votes are now being distributed.

4.55PM

Paul Keller (AAA) has been elected in Limerick city east after he reached the quota following the twelfth count. His surplus of 17 votes is now being distributed.

There are just four votes separating the bottom two remaining candidates Leo Walsh (FG) and Sarah Jane Hennelly (Ind).

No candidate has been elected following the fifth count in Limerick city west. Jason Griffin (Ind) has been eliminated and his 161 votes are now being distributed.

Cllr Joe Leddin (Lab) has retained his seat after being elected to Limerick city west following the fourth count. Gerry Casey (Ind) has been eliminated and his votes are now being distributed.

No candidate has been elected following the eleveth count in Limerick city east. Derrick Towell (AAA) has been eliminated and his 762 votes are now being distributed.

No candidate has been elected following the third count in Limerick city West. Frank Mulqueen (FG) has been eliminated and his 73 votes are now being distributed.

Following the conclusion of the count in Limerick city north, the counting of votes in the Newcastlle West electoral area is now underway.

Cllr John Gilligan (Ind) has been elected in Limerick city north after reaching the quota following the eleventh count. Joe Crowley (FF) has been elected without reaching the quota. Former Mayor, Gerry McLoughlin has lost his seat.

The count for Limerick city north is now complete with Maurice Quinlivan (SF), Michael Hourigan (FG), Cian Prendiville (AAA), Frankie Daly (Lab), John Gilligan (Ind) and Joe Crowley (FF) having all been elected.

1.55PM:

Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon (FF) has been elected following the tenth count in Limerick city east. His six-day old Grandaughter, Sadie, was amongst those in the county centre to see his election.

Frankie Daly (Lab) has been elected following the tenth count in Limerick city north. Outgoing councillor Tom Shortt (Lab) has been eliminated and his 618 votes are now being distributed.

Former Mayor of Limerick, Diarmuid Scully (FG), has been eliminated following the ninth count in Limerick city east while no candidate has been elected following the second count in Limerick city west. Maria Byrne’s (FG) surplus is now being distributed.

We’ve had our first elections of the day at the #LimerickCount.

James Collins (FF) has topped the poll in Limerick city west with 1,445 first preference votes while Maria Byrne (FG) was also elected with 1,370 votes.

We’ve just had the results of two more counts in quick succession at the UL Arena.

No candidate was elected following count 7 in Limerick city east. Jim Hickey (Ind) has been eliminated and his 491 votes are now being distributed.

In Limerick city north, outgoing councillor, Denis McCarthy (FG), has been eliminated following the eight count. His 525 votes are now being distributed.

No candidate was elected following count seven in Limerick city east. Desmond Hayes (Ind) has been eliminated. His 397 votes are now being distributed.

The returning officer, Eugene Griffin, has called upon candidates in Limerick city west to adjudicate on doubtful ballot papers.

No candidate was elected following count six in Limerick city east. Joe Pond (FF) has been eliminated. His 469 votes are now being distributed.

Outgoing councillor Orla McLoughlin (Ind) has lost her seat after she was eliminated following the fifth count in Limerick city east. Her 338 votes are now being distributed.

No candidate was elected following count 6 in Limerick city north. Christy McInerney (FF) has been eliminated. His 297 votes are now being distributed.

There have been no new developments in the past half-an-hour. The state of the parties, as it stands, is Fianna Fail (4), Sinn Fein (3), Fine Gael (2) and Independents (1)

The results of two more counts have been announced in quick sucession at the #LimerickCount.

No candidate was elected following count 5 in Limerick city north so Tina O’Gorman (FG) has been eliminated. Her 235 votes are now being distributed.

In Limerick city east, no candidate was elected following count 6. Noel Hannon (Ind) has been eliminated and his 295 votes are now being distributed.

9.30AM

The Limerick Leader’s Nick Rabbitts reports that counting is under way in the Ireland South European election constituency at the Nemo Rangers’ grounds in Cork city.

Fine Gael is hoping to return two candidates in the sprawling four seater constituency, while Sinn Fein’s Liadh Ni Riada is hoping to win the party’s first seat outside Dublin.

It looks like once again, veteran Fianna Fail MEP Brian Crowley will take the first seat.

However, the first results from the constituency will not be announced until 10pm when the polls have closed across Europe.

9AM

As the #LimerickCount resumes at the UL Arena, just 10 councillors have been elected to Limerick city and county council.

The counting of votes for Limerick city north and Limerick city east has resumed while the first count in Limerick city west in now underway.

The counting of votes cast in Adare/Rathkeale and Newcastle West is not expected to begin until the early afternoon.

Counting in the Cappamore/Kilmallock electoral area concluded shotly after 12.15am.
