The Local Education Committee from Our Lady of Lourdes National School were delighted to host a talk on parenting featuring a special guest lecture from former governor of Mountjoy Prison John Lonergan.

At the meeting Mr Lonergan adressed topics including communication between parents and children and the importance of parents showing support and encouragement.

Home School Community Liaison Coordinator for Our lady of Lourdes Primary School Tracy Fitzgerald said that:

“Mr Lonergan spoke of the value of a parent’s love, support and interest in their child. He also spoke of the times when a parent needs to keep a lid on their own feelings and reactions so as to keep lines of communication open with children and in particular teenagers,” she said. “

“Mr Lonergan’s warmth, compassion and rapport with people shone through on the night,” she added.

The talk was organised by the Education Committee (LEC) in Our Lady of Lourdes School which is a group made up of parents, teachers, school completion staff and community workers who work in partnership to encourage and promote participation in education in the community steadily throughout the year.

Earlier this year the LEC also held a “One Book, One Weston” festival where over 500 copies of Spirit of the Titanic were distributed throughout the parish.
