COUNTY Limerick’s Rebecca Murphy is hoping to be crowned “The Queen of the Land” when she travels to Offaly to take part in the national competition.

COUNTY Limerick’s Rebecca Murphy is hoping to be crowned “The Queen of the Land” when she travels to Offaly to take part in the national competition.

Rebecca who is a member of Croom Macra na Feirme Club and is representing Limerick Macra na Feirme is one of 27 ‘queens’ who will take part in the 48th Queen of the Land festival sponsored by FBD.

“I’m delighted to be representing Limerick. It’s 22 years since Limerick won and I’m hoping to turn that around,” said Rebecca who is from Manister.

The festival which takes place from November 9 to 11 in Tullamore will see the ladies being appraised by a distinguished judging panel who will take into account appearance, personality, energy, confidence, dress sense, rural knowledge and elocution when choosing the contestant which “best exudes the qualities of today’s modern rural woman”.

Rebecca is a civil servant and her hobbies include macra, drama, badminton and jogging.

The 2012 judging panel includes Amanda Brennan, a representative of FBD Insurance, Joe Healy, livestock editor with the Farming Independent and former Macra na Feirme president, and Bernie Woods, reigning 2011 Queen of the Land.

The official opening of the festival takes place at 8pm on Friday, November 9 in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore.

Ireland’s top comedian, Limerickman Karl Spain will be live on stage at 9.30pm, followed by a disco until late.

The queens will face interviews with the judging panel in the Bridge House from 8 am on Saturday, November 10. The group travels to Hugh Lynch’s Bar in the afternoon where they will be introduced to their escorts.

The queens will be put through their paces by MC Deric Hartigan of TV3e and RSVP magazine for the onstage interviews. These begin at 8pm sharp in the Tullamore Court Hotel. Music afterwards by Deuces Wild, entry €15 at the door.

The Gala Banquet takes place at 7pm on Sunday, November, 11 at the Bridge House Hotel.

The announcement and crowning of the 2012 Queen of the Land sponsored FBD will take place at 11pm. Music by Mike Denver, tickets €50 from Bridge House Hotel.
