WORK on the redevelopment of the Markets Field is well underway, with the clearing of the playing surface the first step of an extensive project.

Work on re-laying the playing surface at the facility, which has been unoccupied since 2009, began in recent weeks , starting with clearing of the site.

This is being seen by the Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership, who is overseeing the works, as the “first step” towards the redevelopment of the ground, which was purchased from Bord na gCon in 2009.

The trust hope to see the ground redeveloped into a soccer and sports arena to be enjoyed by the people of Limerick.

A planning application for the ground’s overall redevelopment is to be made in due course, said a spokesman for the project.

“The relaying of the pitch is to get the project underway,” explained a spokesman. “We are talking to all of the partners in the project and Limerick FC is one of them,” he added.
