GALBALLY girl Karen Ryan will enjoy VIP treatment over the June Bank Holiday weekend when she competes in the Blue Jean Country Queen Festival in County Meath.

The festival first began in 1987 when festival founder Patrick Farrelly from Carnaross Macra was driving his tractor and heard the song “I’m a Blue Jean Queen” on the radio. Patrick still remains a member of the festival as well as sponsoring first prize. This year sees the popular festival celebrate its 25th birthday.

Each year ladies gather from all over Ireland and even further afield to celebrate what has become a much loved tradition.

Twenty-one-year-old Karen who is a childcare worker and is a member of Ballylanders Macra will join the other 24 ladies in a fun-filled, action packed weekend.

In her spare time Karen enjoys singing, playing the tin whistle and charity work.

“The ladies will have a hectic schedule from Friday June 1 when they are interviewed on stage in The Old Darney Lodge Hotel in Athboy to the final music session on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon,” said Maeve Hoey PRO of the festival.

Saturday afternoon will see Karen and the other contestants take to the street for the craft fair and carnival. On Sunday meanwhile, the ladies will change from fancy dress to formal dress.

Among the artists on this year’s programme are The All Girl Soul Academy who will perform on Saturday night and Waterford band Lebowski who will take to the stage Sunday night along with local favourite Matt Leavy.

Although fun is the name of the game Karen and the other ladies will be competing for prizes. First prize sponsored by Farrelly Agricultural Contractors is €1500 and the title of Blue Jean Country Queen 2012.

The runner-up will receive €750 sponsored by Stephens Cooke & Co while the contestant placed third will receive €350 sponsored by Gilsenan Brothers.

The winner of the 2012 Blue Jean Country Queen title will be announced at midnight on Sunday, June 3 and will be crowned by reigning queen, Petrice Dineen O’Leary from County Cork.

They will also receive a special commissioned tiara and pearl necklace sponsored by Sara Hunter Goldsmith.
