IT WAS almost the perfect Hollywood ending for Bond – that’s Limerick’s Shane Bond, who came within a hair’s breadth of being flown to LA to meet pin-up actress Megan Fox.

The 39-year-old Castle-connell man finished second in a national Cadbury’s Starbar competition to have an exclusive meet and greet with the Transformers star. Megan Fox has starred in a number of blockbuster movies and has appeared on the front cover of countless magazines.

The men of Ireland were asked to log on to www.nonutsnoglory.ie and upload the most impressive picture of themselves. Shane’s original entry made it to second place and was seen by Megan.

“It was all a bit of fun. I got great mileage and banter from it,” Shane said this week.

“I saw the original ad for it on a website I use every week to organise six-a-side soccer games called teamer.net and thought, ‘Why not?’

“I didn’t do too bad, I was just pipped at the post,” added Shane, whose creative work was done on Microsoft Paint.

The winner got to take a friend on the all-expenses-paid trip of a lifetime, so not surprisingly Shane found that he was even more popular than normal with his friends, who were all vying for the spare seat on the plane.

His female friends even got in on the act.

“My mate Niall Dunne’s girlfriend, Lorraine Fleming, decided to launch her own Facebook campaign for me to win so she could go over and meet Megan’s husband Brian Austin Green,” joked Shane, who lives in Inis Cluain, Castleconnell.

And as the James Bond books were written by Ian Fleming there was a perfect Hollywood-like symmetry – but it wasn’t to be.

There are more Bonds in Ireland than people might think says Shane, who is a software engineer.

“The 1911 census was made public recently and back in those days there were around 500 Bonds. One of the fellows I play soccer with is a Bond and we’re not related so there are actually more than you might think,” said Shane.

In his spare time Shane is writing a screenplay and judging by the response from the starlet to his work it might not be too long before he is breaking into Hollywood too. Megan as lead actress, perhaps?
