The giant screen, which is 15.5 metres wide and nine metres high, has high definition digital quality picture, and incorporates 3D technology.

The new screen is enhanced with a sound system featuring 48 speakers, with bosses at Omniplex promising ‘Voice of God’ ceiling speakers.

Limerick is only the second city in the Republic of Ireland to get this technology, following in the footsteps of Cork, and a number of cinemas in Northern Ireland.

Managing director at Omniplex Paul Anderson said: “OmniplexMAXX is the future of cinema viewing in Ireland and is on a par with the best ‘theatres’ in the United States. The new screen and sound system in Limerick is phenomenal; the city now has one of the premier cinemas in the country.”

The first film screened on the giant screen was Liam Neeson’s new movie ‘Non-Stop’.

Also scheduled for screenings are one-off productions including Opera, live sporting events, musicals, concerts and the ballet.
