Varadkar to address Limerick Chamber on future of Shannon Airport

TRANSPORT Minister Leo Varadkar is to set out his vision on the future of Shannon Airport in an address to Limerick’s business community this Friday morning.
Minister Varadkar has delayed making recommendations on Shannon to cabinet in order to first consult with unions and other interested parties in the Mid-West. It follows a report on the state airports by Booz consultants which arrived on his desk last month.
Limerick Chamber will host Minister Varadkar this Friday morning, January 27 (8am) at the Radisson Hotel, Ennis Road, and that body’s president Kieran MacSweeney said the minister’s views were eagerly awaited at a time when Shannon’s share of passenger numbers at the DAA airports - at seven per cent - were at their lowest ever levels.
“As we all know, the future of the airport is at a crossroads at the moment, with declining passenger numbers and revenue streams. The minister commissioned a report regarding the future ownership and operation options at the airport pre-Christmas. We have all eagerly anticipated an announcement by the minister regarding the recommendations contained in the Booz Report so we look forward to hearing at the breakfast what the minister’s plans are regarding the future of the airport,” said Mr MacSweeney
The Chamber president urged members of the business community to seize the “unique opportunity” to hear Minister Varadkar’s views.

There was some good news for Shannon this week, meanwhile, as airline Wings Abroad announced a new weekly charter to the popular Turkish resort of Bodrum.
The service will begin on June 18, with bookings already open on www.wingsabroad.ie or through travel agents.
An airport spokesman said the charter flight could be used by those heading to Turkey on package holidays but also by passengers looking for seat-only options.
