UL lecturer to talk on economic crisis at city forum
THE impact of the economic crisis will be discussed at a talk to be given by UL lecturer Dr Stephen Kinsella in Limerick next Monday.
The Kemmy Business School lecturer will speak in the White House, Glentworth Street, Limerick, in the first of a series of events "talking about topical issues that matter to the people of Limerick."
The night is being organised by Barney Sheehan, MC of the Wednesday night poetry sessions at the same venue. He hopes the event will attract a different specialist speaker each week.
Dr Kinsella will speak on The Economic and Social Crisis in Limerick: What can be Done?
"I will be speaking about the unfolding economic crisis in Limerick and Ireland generally, especially the industrial devastation of Dell leaving and vast numbers of unemployed people. I will look at different solutions, such as the rollout of NAMA and the Dell task force report," Dr Kinsella told the Limerick Leader.
He also hopes that he can demystify what the National Assets Management Authority actually is, and its role because many people are unclear of its function.
"What I am doing is a translation exercise. I want to tell ordinary people, people who don't look at economics every day, why I think it's good and bad," he said.
When approached by Mr Sheehan to speak, Dr Kinsella's reaction was swift and positive and he would be willing to participate in future talks.
"I am extremely interested in bringing academic economics to the everyday person. The more time academics spend working with the local community, the better. Both groups can be enriched. UL academics cannot just exist in the green parks of Castletroy – they must be out in the community helping, and this is a very small way of doing that," he said.
The talk will get under way at 8.30pm.
