THE popular public bike scheme, dublinbikes, which runs in the capital, may be coming to Limerick if funding can be secured.
A meeting is due to take place in the Limerick City Gallery of Art in Pery Square on November 14, where the idea of such a scheme in the city will be discussed.
The meeting will be held by Minister for Public and Commuter Transport Alan Kelly, who will explore the potential for delivering an effective public bikes scheme in the city.
The scheme, which has proved a major success in Dublin, could also be rolled out in Galway and Cork.
Limerick City Cllr Kevin Kiely is in favour of the idea and thinks the public would embrace it, given the current economic climate.
“I think it’s a very good scheme. Now there are green routes in the university, the city centre and the Ennis Road, I think it would work,” said Cllr Kiely.
“Given the price of petrol and diesel now, people are watching their money and are conscious of money. Many people can’t afford cars so I think the public would be in favour of it,” he added.
Since its introduction in September 2009, dublinbikes has proved hugely popular. There have been over two million journeys and it has been hailed as one of the most successful bike schemes in the world.
