Process underway to appoint head of joint Authority for Limerick

WITH the impending retirements of City Manager, Tom Mackey, and County Manager, Ned Gleesonthe recruitment process for a new manager for the new joint authority is set to begin in earnest.
Mr Mackey’s last day at City Hall will be February 25, and it is understood that between then, and Mr Gleeson’s retirement in April, one of the City Council’s directors of service will take charge on an interim basis.
With Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council set to merge in 2014, Mr Mackey had been set to retire next year.
As revealed by the Limerick Leader earlier this month, Mr Mackey had been in negotiations with the Department of the Environment, Communities and Local Government about bringing his tenure to a close one year early.
With those negotiations at a close, Mr Mackey informed councillors of his decision to stand down last Friday.
The position for the manager is to be advertised in the coming months.
Mayor Jim Long paid tribute to the outgoing manager, saying the news “comes with a sense of sadness”.
“I have the highest admiration for him. We went from a situation where our finances were in the red to the situation where we were in the black with the co-operation of the councillors. He was very focused, he totally engaged with members. He wanted us all to work together as a team,” Cllr Long said.
