Over 22,000 unemployed in Limerick
MORE than 22,000 people across the county are now out of work, according to the new figures just out.
This represents a year-on-year rise of almost 100 per cent - with 12,048 people unemployed this time last year - as the economic downturn takes hold.
However, this number is set to grow further with the completion of Dell's downsizing in Raheen, as well as a number of smaller scale job losses this month in the city - including notably Clancy Electrical's closure of its O'Connell Street base with the loss of five jobs.
The depressing figures reveal that an average of 19 people lost their jobs for every working day in Limerick city and county alone.
Some 2,675 people are now claiming unemployment benefits at Kilmallock's social welfare office, with a further 3,607 people queueing up in Newcastle West.
But it is in the city where the downturn is most felt: with 15,877 queueing up at the Dominic Street social welfare office - up from 8,970 a year ago.
Of those signing on across Limerick, the vast majority are males over the age of 25. But there is an alarming rate in young people unemployed, with the figures from the central statistics office recording almost 3,100 people under 25 on the dole.
Limerick East TD Kieran O'Donnell has this Wednesday repeated his calls for the regeneration process in the city to be fast tracked in a bid to cut the dole queues.
The first report of the Denis Brosnan-chaired task force recommended this happen - and suggested ultimately the multi-billion project could employ 7,000 people.
Nationally, the jobless count for the month of August stands at 440,056, up from 247,384 this time last year.
