Wheel deal delivers for Edward Street bus service
Breakthrough: Deputy O'Donnell
BUS Eireann is to reinstate services on Edward Street from next month, according to Deputy Kieran O’Donnell.
Changes to the city service introduced in September saw the company concentrate services along Hyde Road and O’Connell Avenue and an end to what had been a twice-hourly service along Edward Street.
That decision provoked an outcry and the change of heart follows meetings between local politicians, company management and the National Transport Authority.
Deputy O’Donnell said it had also been agreed to restore a wheelchair-accessible bus for passengers along the Ennis Road.
“This is a major breakthrough on an issue that I have been working on for some time. Both the restoration of service on Edward Street and the restoration of a wheelchair-accessible bus on the Ennis Road were confirmed to me at a recent meeting I held in Dublin with the National Transport Authority on the issue,” he said.
“I am very pleased with the progress on this issue. It is very good news for Limerick. Since my meeting with the National Transport Authority, I have held further discussions with Bus Eireann here in Limerick. I am satisfied that the new Edward Street service will be in place next month and that the accessible bus will be in place as soon as an accessible bus is available.
“We all share a concern that Limerick’s older population and the disabled, who are particularly dependent on public transport be taken care of to the greatest extent possible.
“To this end, I have worked very hard on the issues of bus routes since the new schedule was implemented and will continue to work on behalf of all the people of Limerick to ensure that the best possible public services are available to them,” stated Deputy O’Donnell.
The Fine Gael TD thanked both Bus Eireann and the National Transport Authority for being open to persuasion and taking local concerns on board.
