Uggs and handbags are big hits at Limerick sales

Sales fever is expected to descend on Limerick today as stores across the city and county reopen following the Christmas break.
A number of stores opened early this morning and already goods are being snapped up at a rapid rate with Ugg boots and handbags proving to be a big hit with shoppers.
While the bulk of the sale items will be marked down this morning, last minute shoppers in search of a bargain at Brown Thomas on Christmas Eve struck lucky - the footwear went on sale as well as the young contemporary fashion lines along with selected items in the menswear and children’s wear departments.
“We have fantastic reductions across the store,” said Liam Dwan, general manager of Brown Thomas in Limerick. “Footwear has been marked down by 50 to 60 per cent. As is typical with a city centre, the nicer the weather the better the trade,” he said.
With the recession taking its toll on people’s spending budgets, shoppers are now much move savvy when it comes to making a splurge.
“Buyers are buying cleverer so obviously they are being more selective in their buying,” Mr Dwan noted.
“Uggs are still doing fantastic and we have noticed in menswear that our new Tommy Hilfiger department which we have done a lot of work on, is proving very popular. The old reliable Jo Malone is again very popular for gift sets. And of course handbags, we are selling them very fast particularly Mulberry and Michael Kors.”
The fashion industry of course is always looking ahead and Brown Thomas Limerick already have a lot of new season stock hitting the shelves. “So we are hitting the ground running,” said Mr Dwan.
While most stories in the city centre have been bustling since 9am, the die-hard sale enthusiasts were up at the crack of dawn to get the best of the bargains at Next on the Childers Road Retails Park.
Doors opened at 5am with all of last seasons stock being sold off at half price or less.
“It’s a genuine sale so everything that has been on the floor for this season is half price,” said Gillian Bennis, assistant manager at Next in the Crescent where the much anticipated sale starts at 6am this Thursday.
