Slight fall in jobless rate across Limerick
The dole queue fell slightly in Limerick month-on-month
THE number of people out of work in Limerick has fallen slightly month-on-month, new figures show.
Data just released from the Central Statistics Office reveal that there were 13,527 claiming unemployment benefits in Limerick City.
This is a drop of 50 month-on-month. A similar fall has been reported county wide, with 19,239 people out of work - a drop of 65 from 19,304 at the end of January.
Northside Sinn Fein councillor Maurice Quinlivan says the small drop masks the fact many people are emigrating.
“When emigration is factored in we are in a worse position month on month,” he said.
He said that with the government creating an average of 100 jobs each month, it would take 87 years for the government to reach its 100,000 jobs target.
He added: “The CSO quarterly household survey shows that across the state as a whole, for every job the government has created, 18 people have either given up looking for work or have emigrated. Clearly there is no improvement and unemployment remains a catastrophe in the city. People are left in despair with no hope and worried about how they will pay their bills.”
Cllr Quinlivan called on the government to invest in schools, hospitals, transport and retrofitting of other facilities to create immediate jobs, and a boost to the economy.
