Programme to rid Limerick streets of graffiti welcomed

A MAJOR programme to rid the city’s shop fronts of graffiti will swing into action next Wednesday.
As exclusively revealed by the Limerick Leader on Monday, Limerick City Council is to sponsor a clean-up of shop fronts in Cruises Street, William Street and Catherine Street, in a bid to remove graffiti which has plagued businesses.
And in a bid to give the city a further lift, the council is also going to team up with the Limerick City Gallery of Art to decorate the grey, often graffiti-ridden cable junction boxes in Catherine Street.
Limerick Chamber chief executive Maria Kelly is delighted with the course of action the council is taking.
She said: “We are delighted to see such positive engagement from the management at City Hall, and the new directors under [economic director] Tom Enright. We have had quite an number of meetings with them, and we will have ongoing dialogue with them throughout 2013 over the upkeep, marketing and promotion of the city.”
Ms Kelly is hoping 2013 will also bring an acceleration of the city’s pedestrianisation programme, with part of the city’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street, yet to enjoy the benefits of being foot traffic only.
On the junction boxes, she said: “These type of things will make a difference. And the improvements to the public realm looks very well. Everything is going to help the overall appearance of the city, and lift people.”
Although it is legally the responsibility of shop owners to clean up, economic director Mr Enright said: “We are aware these areas have been subject to extensive vandalism, and it is hoped that this once-off gesture will encourage business owners in combatting graffiti.”
Limerick City and County Council is currently embarking on a “visual audit” of the city centre, with staff in contact with owners, regarding essential works, the painting of premises, the removal of weeds and signs of general dereliction.
The council is taking action against some parties who have already applied graffiti in the city.
