Over €5m flagged for West Limerick roads over next four years

AN AMBITIOUS plan to invest €5.2 million in local and rural roads in West Limerick over the next four years has been unveiled by Limerick County Council.
Local engineers have identified 47 roads projects covering over 52 km in the Newcastle West area which will be targeted for improvements between 2013 and 2016. The multi-annual roads programme will be funded to the tune of €1.3 million per year, and represents one of the most significant co-ordinated investments in the rural roads network in recent times.
The programme has seen stretches of road of up to 2km long assessed and listed for works based on priority. Roads engineer with Limerick County Council’s area office in Newcastle West, Padraig Vallely, said that the projected spend of €1.3 million a year for the next four years is based on the average level of grant funding made available locally since 2010.
The highest priority project listed for work in 2013 is the repair of margins and the road surface on the Buttevant road at Carraward, Dromcollogher up to the nearby border with Cork. The 2km project is set to cost the council €245,000.
Other projects listed for priority in 2013 are €125,000 for Killacullen, Tournafulla; €130,000 for Caherlevoy in Mountcollins; €140,000 for the L1311 Ahawilk road towards Broadford, and separate grants of between €90,000 and €95,000 for schemes elsewhere in Athea, Feenagh, Templeglantine, Abbeyfeale and Dromcollogher.
The majority of the schemes will deal with overlay and surface repairs on roads where conditions have deteriorated following successive bad winters in 2009 and 2010.
In 2014, council engineers expect to spend €200,000 on road works between Station road and Churchtown in Newcastle West, as well as €130,000 for the upgrade of the road through Ashford village. In excess of €100,000 each will be spent in 2014 on sections at Kilconclea, Abbeyfeale and Ballyneale, Ballingarry, while smaller investments will be made on roads in Feohanagh, Broadford and Mountcollins.
Other schemes flagged for investment in 2015 and 2016 include over €130,000 each for Glenagower, Athea and the R515 between Tournafulla and Templeglantine; €140,000 for Fealesbridge to the N21 in Abbeyfeale, €110,000 for Boherbui, Newcastle West; €120,000 each for the Feenagh to Dromcollogher road, the Athea to Carrigkerry road and John Roche’s road at Mountcollins.
