New owner of Limerick hotel remains a mystery

IT could be three weeks before any official announcement is made regarding the future of the Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel.

The hotel, which was recently purchased for €3m, is continuing to operate as normal and this week was advertising three-month gym memberships, which may indicate that it could remain as a hotel for some time to come.

The hotel was purchased for a record price of €25m in 2004, but was sold for 88% less of this asking price last week by an as yet unknown bidder.

Pat Kearney of Rooney Auctioneers in the city said it would be at least three weeks before any official information regarding the future of the hotel would be disclosed.

A spokesperson from the Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel also said that there was no other information available regarding the buyer of the hotel other than the rumours in the public domain.

A potential buyer for the hotel site was rumoured to be owner of the Supermac’s fast food chain Pat McDonagh.

However a spokesperson for the fast food outlet declined to comment when contacted by the Limerick Leader.

There have been a number of unsubstantiated rumours regarding the future of the Castletroy hotel, including the prospect that it could be converted into a catering college.

The hotel is owned by CPH investments, a subsidiary company of the Fordmount Property Group, which went into receivership with debts of over €200m in 2009.

The four-star, 107-room hotel has been successfully operated by the Carlton group since 2009.

Prior to Carlton’s take over, the hotel closed its doors early in 2009 after 18 years in business, citing “insurmountable trading difficulties”.
