New Limerick bridge could be reserved for pedestrians and cyclists
Kieran Lehane of Limerick City Council has mooted the idea of having a crossing of the River Shannon for cyclists and pedestrians
THE city’s new director of transport services Kieran Lehane said he would one day like to see a crossing of the Shannon “reserved for pedestrians and bicycles”.
As somebody who cycled to work, Mr Lehane said cycleways were an issue close to his heart. “What better way to promote the river than to have a crossing for pedestrian and bike access only,” he said.
Mr Lehane said he and Mayor Gerry McLoughlin often travelled to official functions together by bicycle and he was taken by the lack of secure bicycle parking facilities in the city.
He was opening a discussion at the transport committee on what policy initiatives members wanted prioritised.
Committee member James Nix said one of the city’s existing bridges was not pedestrian-friendly.
“If you are crossing Sarsfield Bridge with another person and you meet two people coming in the opposite direction, you have to go into single file to get by. The footpaths are too narrow,” he said.
While Mr Nix acknowledged the bridge was a protected structure, similar problems in London had been overcome by adding boardwalk-type structures on either side of the bridge.
