New €1.2m scanner for Limerick private hospital

a €1.2 million scanner, the first of its kind in the Mid-West region, was craned in to Barringtons Hospital this week.
The scanner will be of benefit to the obese, heart patients and those suffering from claustrophobia in Limerick’s only private hospital.
“From the middle of November, patients will be able to avail of the many advantages of this scanner which is state of the art, and is the most recent generation in 1.5T scanners.
“For instance it has a much wider opening therefore giving patients attending the centre a more comfortable MRI experience.
“It will also allow people who are too big for conventional scanners to avail of this essential diagnostic imaging tool,” explained Malcolm Banks, the managing director of Barringtons MRI.
The 1.5T Widdiae Bore MRI scanner is also equipped to examine the heart, thus expanding the range of specialities catered for at the Barringtons centre.
MRI is an important tool in the detection for certain forms of heart disease. MRIs are also used in the diagnosis of neurological and muscular-skeletal issues, particularly in soft tissue areas such as the nerves, muscles, ligaments, joints, brain and liver.
The centre also offers bone densitometry scanning, which is used in the diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Earlier this year the hospital announced that it would be creating 30 jobs over the next three years as part of their expansion plans.
