Limerick city is best value holiday destination in the country

LIMERICK is one of the cheapest holiday destinations in the country, with hotel room rates averaging €64 per night this year.
Hotel room rates in the city remained flat in the first half of 2012, according to the latest Hotels.com hotel price index, and over all prices for Limerick hotels have remained unchanged for the past two years.
On a national level, hotel room rates remained stable in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year.
The average for a hotel room in Limerick may be €64, but a simple search of hotel price comparison sites shows that a room in Limerick can be booked for a fraction of that, as Jury’s Inn, and the Travelodge in Coonagh and Castletroy can all be booked for less than €40 per night, depending on the date.
No. 1 Pery Square is among the most expensive in the city, at around €115 per night, nearly twice the local average.
While Limerick is regarded as best value in terms of spend, Kilkenny is the most expensive place to stay in Ireland, at €96 a night, closely followed by Galway and Killarney, where rooms cost €94 per night.
They are followed respectively by Belfast, Cork, Sligo, Dublin, Waterford and then Limerick.
The average hotel price in the country is €81 per night, with hoteliers managing to maintain price levels following a four per cent price increase in 2011. Globally, hotel room prices rose four per cent in the same period.
Dublin hotel rates rose by three per cent in the first half of 2012, bringing the average hotel price to €77 per night. The rise can be attributed to a number of well-attended events in the capital, including high profile concerts such as Bruce Springsteen and The Stone Roses, and festivals such as Dublin City of Science and the Tall Ships.
However, room rates in Dublin are recovering from several years of steep decline and are no way near 2008 prices when the average room rate in the capital was €105 per night.
Hotels.com said the stabilisation in the Irish market can be attributed to a number of factors including “advanced bookings for festivals and concerts, the return of the conference market and the continued value on offer throughout the country”.
Ireland remains one of the best value destinations in western Europe with only Portugal (€77) and Malta (€73) less expensive than Ireland at present. Dublin is still one of the best value capital cities in Europe with prices significantly less than London (€137), Stockholm (€135), and Rome (€103).
