Irish Rail to cut services from Limerick City

IRISH Rail is proposing to remove a number of services out of Colbert station this year.

According to the rail provider’s draft 2013 timetable, which is currently open for consultation, two services between Limerick and Dublin will not operate.

The 13.40 service between Heuston Station and Colbert Station in Limerick will not operate, while the 05.05 service from Limerick to Dublin via Nenagh will also not run.

However, Irish Rail has said there will be journey time improvements of up to 17 minutes, with the fastest journey time being two hours.

The route between Limerick and Galway is also to see cuts - with the 11:55am departure from Limerick, and the 12:10pm service from Galway to be cancelled.

But there will be speed increases of between four and 11 minutes on the route, which has suffered from low passenger numbers.

Limerick Junction is to lose two connections to Waterford, with the 11.40 train from the city ceasing to operate, alongside the 13.55 from Limerick Junction.

Finally, the 16:05 Limerick to Ballybrophy via Nenagh service and the 18:20 return service will no longer operate, Irish Rail have indicated.

Fianna Fail TD Willie O’Dea criticised the proposed cuts - and called on Limerick’s two ministers at the cabinet table to intervene.

“I have to recognise the fact they [Irish Rail] need to operate in a way which will minimise losses to the tax payer. But I would like to see what is happening elsewhere. There seems to be increasing marginalisation of this nature. It is a blackspot for unemployment, and now we have a situation where the railway service is being cut off,” he told the Limerick Leader.

Irish Rail has yet to announce when it will introduce the new timetables.
