Irish Rail propose cuts to Limerick Nenagh service

TRACK improvements and the removal of speed limits will see up to 17 minutes shaved off train journeys between Limerick and Dublin and up to 11 minutes off trips to Galway, according to changes proposed by Irish Rail.
But the company is also proposing significant cuts in services for passengers commuting to Castleconnell, Birdhill and Nenagh along the Limerick-Ballybrophy line.
The proposed changes would see both the 5.05 and 16.05 Limerick to Ballybrophy services discontinued as well the 18.20 train departing Ballybrophy in the opposite direction. This would leave just two services a day on the line, which is sure to anger campaigners who have been fighting a rearguard action against arguments the line should be closed altogether as it is underutilised and uneconomic.
Irish Rail, meanwhile, has encouraged Limerick passengers to air their views on the proposed schedule changes before the 2013 schedule is finalised.
“These are then examined before the final timetable is adopted. Iarnród Éireann is asking customers for their opinions on the proposed schedule, which can be submitted via an online form,” said a spokesman.
