PLANS to import liquefied natural gas to a terminal in Ballylongford are to face investigation by the European Parliament.

A delegation from Brussels is due in Limerick later this year, after fears were raised over the lack of a marine risk assessment done on the site. The multi-million euro plans, which could create up to 500 jobs locally, were fast-tracked through the planning process.

Johnny McElligott, Safety Before LNG, appeared before the European Petitions Committee last week, arguing that a full assessment should have been carried out before the development was given the go-ahead.

“Without a marine risk assessment, we cannot know what the safety, environmental and cumulative impacts of LNG traffic and exclusion zones on the Shannon Estuary would be until after completion of the project,” Mr McElligott said. He won the support of Dublin MEP Paul Murphy, as well as representatives from Greece and Germany.
