THE Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has ordered a local cheese producer to stop putting batches on the market, after e-coli was found in its gouda herb cheese.

Kilshanny Farmhouse Cheese has a foodstall in the Milk Market, according to a statement issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, and is also sold by a retailer in Co Clare. It is understood the company is based in Lahinch.

The FSAI said e.coli O157 has been found in a batch of Gouda herb cheese by that producer, and advised consumers not to eat the implicated cheese. They advised that E. coli O157 may cause severe bloody diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, although sometimes the infection causes non-bloody diarrhoea or no symptoms. In some groups, particularly children under five years of age and the elderly, the infection can also cause a complication where the red blood cells are destroyed and the kidneys fail.
