Developer of Limerick’s Parkway Valley seeks to widen access roads

THE developers behind the Parkway Valley project has applied for an extension to its planning permission to widen the roads around its access point.
Six months after securing a five year time extension from County Council to its planning permission to build the massive shopping centre, Alocin is now seeking the same from Limerick City to build the roads around the development.
The controversial project lies on the county/city boundary, hence the need to approach two authorities for permission to develop the centre, first mooted in 2006.
While County Council gave permission for the centre in 2007, City Council also gave permission to widen the access points from the N7.
Now Alocin is looking for an extension of time on this.
According to the application, there will be improvements and widening of the road, as well as a provision of a new link from the existing roundabout.
There will also be “infrastructure/site works” associated with the proposed multi-level car parking area, and a service yard.
Fine Gael’s southside councillor Diarmuid Scully said the council would have no reason to refuse planning permission, because it already gave the road improvements the go-ahead five years ago.
But, he said he hopes the project is a “commercial failure.”
“This should never have been given planning permission. Limerick County Council made an appalling mistake. I think they did recognise this mistake later on, but for legal reasons, they had to grant an extension. It is going to be difficult to see us doing anything different,” Cllr Scully said, “Limerick has roughly twice as many shops as it needs. The last thing our county needs is yet another big shopping centre: I sincerely hope it never gets built, and in fact the eyesore is taken down.”
