A COUNTY Limerick parochial house which dates from the early 1800s and is a grade 1 listed building is on the market for €599,000.

The five-bedroom residence in Kilmallock which is known as the parochial house was built between 1810 and 1815 as a convent.

After being used as a school, it then reverted back to a convent again and remained as such up to the 1930s when it became the parochial house.

The house had been divided in two – with one side inhabited by the priests and the other catering for the nuns.

The property has been comprehensively restored in recent years creating a period home with all the original character and features found in a property of the era in which it was built.

The current owners have restored it to one single house.

“They have refurbished the whole building,” explained Margaret Doyle, sales agent with Team Quane auctioneers.

“When they renovated it, they kept as much of the original features as possible and anything they had to get done, they replicated it in the old style in keeping with the era in which it was built. It is a magnificent building which has incredible history,” she added.

The 3,500 sq ft house which is set on one acre was re-plumbed, rewired and redecorated by the couple who have vast experience of property redevelopment in Ireland and England.

The couple have kept a number of the original features including coving, high ceilings, original light switches, original sash windows with wood shutters, fireplaces and all rooms are complemented with chandeliers.

The main living room boasts an original Regency fireplace which is one of a few remaining in Ireland.

The bathroom boats an impressive corner Jacuzzi.

“There are original stain glass windows upstairs in what the current owners call the sanctuary,” Margaret explained.

The house, which is situated on elevated ground on the Kilfinane Road, is located next to library, court house and the county council offices.
