Chuck Feeney’s €200m generosity to University of Limerick

THE UNIVERSITY of Limerick has expressed its gratitude to Chuck Feeney, the billionaire philanthropist who gave away all his fortune, and helped build the UL campus.

The chief executive of the UL foundation, David Cronin said it raised in excess of €200 million in philanthropic support “thanks in no small part to the overwhelming generosity of Mr Chuck Feeney”.

Feeney, who has given more than €1.25 billion to projects across Ireland, announced this week that his charitable organisation, Atlantic Philanthropies, is winding down its operations towards 2016.

Mr Cronin said support from the Atlantic Philanthropies has allowed UL to complete major projects, including the sports arena, library, on-campus student & staff accommodation, professorships, scholarships and research laboratories.

“A great example is the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance on the banks of the River Shannon,” he added, with the philanthropist personally attending the opening of this €15m development last year.

Mr Feeney remains a board member of the UL Foundation and “is actively engaged in guiding the ongoing development of the university,” said Mr Cronin in a statement.

He also provided funding towards the €2m residence for the university residence on campus, which was a source of controversy at the time.

Milford Care Centre, and support agency for migrants, Doras Luimni, have also been recipients from the so-called “secret billionaire”.

Milford Care Centre received some €5.4m from Atlantic Philanthropies over a three-year period. Mary Immaculate College received €407,000 from Atlantic Philanthropies in 2001 for a project to address disruptive pupil behaviour in primary schools in disadvantaged areas.
