‘Boost’ for Limerick with 400 jobs for city

Boost: Finance minister Michael Noonan

LIMERICK looks set for a massive jobs boost after Minister for Finance Michael Noonan confirmed that 400 new positions are “at the final stages of negotiation”.

It is only weeks since financial services firm Northern Trust announced plans to expand its base in Plassey’s National Technology Park with 400 new jobs.

Now it looks as if another firm is to emulate this, Mr Noonan said at the Limerick Chamber Region Business Awards.

The Limerick Leader understands that jobs are to be based in the city and that an entirely new company are at the final stages of locating here.

Asked if he was able to disclose further details of the company, Mr Noonan said: “Not really. I can tell you it is true though. It is at the final stages of negotiation, and it will be a big boost for Limerick”.

However, he did confirm that the company is not in the financial services sector, declaring: “We have a lot of strings to our bow”.

Following on from the confirmation of 400 jobs in September at Northern Trust, Mr Noonan says he will lobby IDA chief executive Barry O’Leary to ensure other financial services firms looking to invest in Ireland take a look at Limerick as well as Dublin.

Referring to the capital, Mr Noonan said: “On a competitive base, we will beat them, and on the availability of bright people out in LIT, and the university, we will beat them, and on the lifestyle, we will beat them at that too”.

There was further good news for Limerick with news that medical devices manufacturer Cook Medical has won approval to sell a product in the United States, a decision which could lead to the creation of new jobs in its Limerick operation.
