PLANET Leisure LTD have announced the opening of a new health club in Limerick, bringing 15 new jobs to the city.

The new gym will be located in site vacated recently by JJB in the retail park on Childers Road.

The new facilities are set to include a 20m swimming pool, a large gym with over 70 cardiovascular machines, free weights and fixed resistance machines, a spinning studio and a class studio with up to 50 weekly classes.

Planet Health Club Limerick is an Irish owned and operated company with facilities in Cork, Galway, Athlone and Ennis. The company say the new club is not aimed at the luxury market, rather it will be open to everyone.

20 jobs were lost earlier this month when JJB moved to close its sports store and gym in the retail park.

This came after the liquidator appointed to the troubled firm could not find a buyer.

The demise of JJB Sports had been on the cards since the summer when it failed to secure capital to stay afloat. The British arm of the firm plunged into administration, and rival chain Sports Direct bought some outlets. However, there was no interest in the four Irish outlets, which led to the closure in Limerick.
