Limerick legal firm wins prestigious award

LIMERICK law firm Sweeney McGann are celebrating the receipt of an internationally recognised award this week.
The legal practice were rewarded for their work in successfully representing the Limerick Vintners in the landmark decision to allow pubs to open on Good Friday last year.
The O’Connell Street based law firm, which employ in the region of 40 people, were awarded the 2011 Corporate INTL Global Award for “Licensing Law Firm of the Year in Ireland”.
The work undertaken by Sweeney McGann in securing the special exemption was identified as an ‘international landmark case’ by the judging panel made up of panel of global experts which included senior partners of global law and accounting firms, the president of a global legal network and CEO’s from major multinational companies.
The prestigious awards were announced in London and managing partner Gearoid McGann, who personally acted on the landmark ruling, expressed his delight that the firm’s achievements were recognised.
“It is a huge accolade for the firm to receive this award and I am delighted for the entire team who are involved in the delivery of our licensing and commercial services,” he told the Limerick Leader.
“It is particularly pleasing for a Limerick firm to achieve this recognition based on a case that generated so much positive global attention for the city,” he added in reference to the decision made by Judge Tom O’Donnell, which allowed pubs to open on Good Friday for the high profile clash between Munster Leinster in Thomond Park.
The landmark licensing decision was based around the designation of the Magners League game as a ‘special event’, and was the first time since the 1920s that pubs in Ireland opened on Good Friday.
The decision to award the area exemption received extensive international media coverage around the world, based both on its legal and social significance.
Sweeney McGann were shortlisted for the award after selection by an independent board.
