Limerick City Council secure funding for new foothpath
LIMERICK City Council is to undertake a survey of Roxboro Road Bridge with a view to installing a footpath.
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has announced a grant of €30,000 to City Hall in order for it to improve pedestrian safety on the heavily-used bridge.
Mr Varadkar also announced a further €170,000 in funding for the resurfacing of the Carey’s Road and the Upper Carey’s Road. Since the volume of heavy vehicle traffic on this road has increased over the years, the road has deteriorated.
Cllr Joe Leddin has welcomed the news. “With the completion of the Southern Ring road there are still a significant number of heavy goods vehicles and buses that use the main Roxboro Road and Carey’s road as a through road to access Mallow Street and the Shannon bridge. Given the serious economic conditions that the country is in this grant of €200,000 will also provide a boost to contractors who successfully tender for this work,” he said.
Former Mayor, Cllr Maria Byrne, who is a member of the city council’s transport committee also welcomed the funding. “I am on the council 13 years, and I know it has been an issue for this length of time, and I am sure it was an issue well before that. The volume of people that walk that way on a daily basis and use that bridge is a lot, and this will be a big boost to residents,” she said.
