BOOT CAMP
WITH a national shortage of software engineers, and a decline in the take-up of engineering places at third level, a three month-long boot camp has been set up in a bid to help people upskill in the area of software engineering.
The programme, which has been arranged by software development company Ardlee Ltd, is an intensive programme which will provide full training to certification level.
The aim of the course - which will take place in Ardlee's facilities in the National Technology Park - is to allow graduates to reenter the workforce as "trained Microsoft Certified Professional Developers."
Full internet and office facilities are available to the attendees and additional entrepreneurial support is available in the form of workshops to those that would like to understand how to set up and run successful international high technology companies.

NAME CHANGE
THE Mid-West Society of Chartered Accountants has changed the wording of its name to 'The Chartered Accountants Mid-West Society'.
The change, which occurred last week, comes about as a result of a corresponding change in the title of the overall representative body in Ireland - Chartered Accounts Ireland.
The purpose of the change is to more closely align all district societies and place the emphasis on the word 'Chartered' and the high regard with which it is associated.
The Chartered Accountants Mid-West Society - which has a membership of over 800 - is in the process of setting up its own web site which should be up and running by the end of this month.
Speaking about the move, Mid-West Society Chairman Paul Cunningham said: "The purpose of this change is a simple one. We want to bring our key brand attribute, chartered accountants, to the forefront of everything we do. The new logo for the Mid-West Society takes a modern and fresh approach but builds on the historic strength of the island's oldest and largest professional accountancy body."
SEEDCORN COMPETITION
THERE are just three weeks left for fledgling firms to enter a competition which offers its winners a share in a €360,000 prize pot.
The All-Ireland Seedcorn Competition, which is backed by Intertrade Ireland is open to companies or individuals in the early stages of development, and have a new equity requirement of at least €100,000.
Entries for the competition, tasked with finding the best early stage companies in the country, is nearing its closing date, with the Munster finals set to take place in early November.
Two Limerick firms will walk away from that with €20,000 in funding, and they will bid for another €100,000 in funding at the All Island (ISLAND) final, which takes place in late November.
The competitions' Limerick finalists will no doubt be hoping to follow in the footsteps of ParkMagic - who scooped €25,000 from the awards in 2005, and are now a fully fledged business, operating a parking disc scheme in the city.
As well as cash prizes, the competition also offers an invaluable chance for early stage businesses to make valuable contacts, accelerate business idea development, and gain exposure - with venture capitalists and other investors involved in the process.
The closing date for entries is 1pm on Friday, September 25. For more information, visit www.seedcorncompetition.com or contact 048 3083 4137 Alternatively, email seedcorn@intertradeireland.com.
