THE opening of a private clinic to be known as the Galway Clinic at Adare has not gone ahead as early in the New Year as originally anticipated.

But calls, both to Adare Hotel Ltd who applied for planning permission for the clinic and to the Galway Clinic, who are to develop the facility, were not returned this Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Limerick Leader understands that no work has begun to develop the clinic, which is intended to provide an outpatient service for the privately-owned and run Galway Clinic.

Last August, Mark Sheehan, development manager with the Galway Clinic, confirmed to the Limerick Leader that a clinic would open early in the New Year. Permission had been granted by Limerick County Council in July for a change of use of part of the existing clubhouse at Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort. The permission, which took two years to come through, was to allow minor alterations to the internal layout of five bedrooms and to provide car parking and an access road, off an existing access road on the estate.

“We are not going to be doing structural changes,” Mr Sheehan said at the time but added: “It will be a nice facility.”

Initially, according to Mr Sheehan, the clinic in Adare would offer CT scans, X-rays, echo-cardiograms and ultrasound as well as blood-testing.

The satellite clinic, would be “testing the waters” for the first year or two of operations, Mr Sheehan continued. “We are going to assess the situation, to see what the demand is like,” he said. “We have planning for a hospital on the same grounds. It is dependant on how busy the outpatient clinic is.”

Any, potential, future hospital would seek to offer what is not already in the area and would work in tandem with the Galway Clinic, offering complementary services, Mr Sheehan explained. And he stressed his belief that there was huge potential for a hospital. “It is my firm hope and belief we will have a full hospital down the line.”

The establishment of a private hospital on the grounds of Adare Manor was a long-held goal of Tom Kane, who originally bought the hotel in the 1990s but whose share-holding is now believed to be a minority one.
