LIMERICK people are not the luckiest in the country when it comes to picking the winning Lotto numbers, but one newsagents in the city has sold three winning tickets worth nearly €6m.

The odds of a Limerick person winning the lottery are the 13th best in the country, according to figures relased by the National Lottery showing the breakdown of prizes by county.

An analysis of €1 million-plus jackpots going back to May 1989 shows that Limerick has shared €175,949,323 between its 27 lottery winners in the past quarter of a century.

The Paper Mill shop on Patrick Street in the city is the only shop in Limerick that has sold a winning ticket not twice, but three times, resulting in a total payout of €5,897,403 over the past 25 years.

In comparison, there have been 77 lottery wins in Cork resulting in over €218m being paid out, while in Dublin there have been 285 lottery wins, amounting to nearly €815m.

In all, more than 750 lottery millionaires have been created between the National Lottery’s flagship Lotto game and, in later years, additional games such as the EuroMillions.

Louth is the luckiest county with 2.3 lottery millionaires per 10,000 population since its inception.

Dublin is the second luckiest county, with 2.2 lottery millionaires per 10,000 population. Over the past two and a half decades, 285 millionaires have shared more than €800 million between them in the county, an amount which, if it was shared between every man, woman and child in Dublin, would average out at €640 each. Limerick is in 13th place on the list with 1.4 millionaires in every 10,000 people.

However, Limerick woman Dolores McNamara remains the biggest winner in the State, since her massive €115 million prize win the Euromillions in 2005.

If her winnings and the €60 million in combined winnings of 26 other Limerick lottery millionaires over the past 26 years means were shared out per capital of population every single person living in Limerick would be €917 richer, by far the highest distribution to each person in the State. The low-profile former Garryowen woman is listed as the 94th richest person in the State, according to this year’s Sunday Times Rich List.

In July, one person scooped over €4.4m after buying a quick-pick in Sixmilebridge, though like many other winners, their identity is not known. A family syndicate from County Limerick also picked up a cool €1m prize from the Lotto in June, after buying their ticket in Ryan’s Foodstores in Raheen.
