PART of the former Jury’s Inn Hotel is to be home to a ‘superpub’ as part of a €1m investment in the city.
Jury’s Inn Hotel on Lower Mallow Street was sold to overseas investors for around €3m last year, and changed its name to the Limerick City Hotel. And while it will still operate as a hotel, a large part of the ground floor and the reception area will now be home to McGettigan’s Pub, founded in Dublin in the 1960s, and now based in Dubai.
A total of 25 jobs have been created, and the bar is set to open its fifth outlet here on Friday, May 30, while an official launch will take place on Thursday, June 5.
Singer-songwriter Paddy Casey will perform at the launch.
Asked why McGettigan’s chose to open in Limerick, Declan Pierce, group band director, said: “We love Limerick. Simple as that. In our pubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we have two Limerickmen looking after our entertainment. We have invested in the Limerick City Hotel and as part of a refurbishment to the hotel, we wanted to install our unique McGettigan’s pub.”
The chain serves the large ex-pat community in Dubai with branches at the world-famous Jumeirah Lakes Towers, the Dubai World Trade Centre, and Dubai International Airport.
There, they have hosted major live sporting events, and featured concerts and gigs from the likes of the Coronas, Jason Byrne and East 17.
Mr Pierce says it is hoped to bring regular live performances to Limerick.
Local businessman Keith Hennessy, who owns the nearby Brimstone Steakhouse, says he is excited by the opening.“It is great for the area: I can’t wait. It is going to bring so many extra people to this neighbourhood, including stag and hen parties. So hopefully they will come across to us for a few cocktails before they go and see a live band in the hotel. I think it is going to be a big player. McGettigan’s is probably the most well-known pub in Dubai,” he said.
McGettigan’s Pub was first opened in 1960s Dublin by Donegal man Jim McGettigan, before growing to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 2010. Another branch of the pub opened in Letterkenny last year.
Group CEO Dennis McGettigan said: “It’s all about excellent food, beverages, service, entertainment and spot, mixed with interactive feedback from our customers through social media.”
