Business group for Lisbon form
AS the countdown to the second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty continues, more than 30 business groups across Ireland have united to form an independent campaign group.
The group, named 'Business for Europe', includes the Limerick Chamber of Commerce, IBEC and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Its aim is to campaign for a yes vote in the referendum, which takes place here on October 2.
To this end, a series of events will be held around Ireland between now and October, while a dedicated web site - www.businessforeurope.ie - has also been launched.
Limerick Chamber chief executive Maria Kelly said: "Ireland's membership of, and participation at the core of the European Union is crucial to rebuilding our own economy. It puts Ireland in a positive position to tackle global issues, in particular the economic slowdown, and the ongoing banking crisis. This treaty equips us with more efficient structures that will allow Ireland and Europe to compete effectively."
Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan of the Irish Hotels Federation Shannon Branch said: "A yes vote will send a strong signal right across Europe that Ireland remains at the centre of the EU during these very difficult economic times. Our membership of the EU has contributed significantly to Ireland's past success and has boosted our attractiveness as a tourist destination. The introduction of the Euro and enlargement of the EU to the east provided Ireland's hospitality sector with both stability and significant new business opportunities. The Lisbon Treaty builds on these successful initiatives."
