HEALTH insurance firm VHI is to close its Limerick office later this month.

The office in Merchant’s Quay will close for the final time to the public on Friday, July 19.

A spokesperson for the insurer said the office will close due to a fall-off in customers using the branch.

This comes because more business is carried out online or over the telephone.

No jobs will be lost, and the centre will continue to operate as an administrative centre.

Front-line staff affected by the closure will be asked to work in administration functions.

Fine Gael councillor Denis McCarthy, who represents the area where the office is located, said the closure is “regrettable.”

“It is surprising with the number of people in VHI who do not even know the location of the office. I would recommend people call in there, and many of them were not aware that it existed,” he said. “But it is regrettable a business is closing in the city.”
