THE first official day of winter brought snowfall to County Limerick this Thursday morning.

Residents in areas of south Limerick including Kilfinane and Kilmallock woke up to heavy showers of sleety snow as seen in this photograph taken from the window of a house in Kilfinane, posted to social media site Twitter this Thursday morning by @ErisianLib.

Driving conditions were described as difficult for motorists. However, there have been no reports of any road collisions.

The snow has since cleared and weather forecasters predict further heavy showers of rain or hail tonight in Munster with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees. There will also be a touch of frost in sheltered areas.

Showers are forecast for much of the weekend, with some sunny spells and temperatures of between 3 and 8 degrees during the day, and a potential low of -3 on Saturday night.
