The road on either side of Oola bridge was closed at midnight and will remain closed until 6am next Monday morning. The closure is to facilitate the construction of a new railway bridge.

The bridge, located on the Tipperary side of Oola, has to be replaced because one of its abutments is substantially weakened. ‘Temporary’ traffic lights were put in place in March 2011 to make the bridge one lane and keep vehicles off the weakened side.

Eastbound traffic from Limerick going to Tipperary will divert on to the R505 at Grange Cross and continue through Cappamore, Doon, Cappawhite and Dundrum to Tipperary and on to the N24.

Westbound traffic from Tipperary to divert on to the R515 though Emly, on to Knocklong where they turn right on to the R513 and continue through Hospital, Caherconlish and back on to the N24 at Beary’s Cross.

For rail passengers, bus transfers will be in operation between Limerick and Thurles in each direction until Thursday evening.
