LIMERICK city centre has been given a boost with the announcement that 3,000 car parking spaces will be free to use every weekend between now and Christmas.

LIMERICK city centre has been given a boost with the announcement that 3,000 car parking spaces will be free to use every weekend between now and Christmas.

Limerick City Council has announced that on-street parking will be free to use from 2pm on Friday and Saturday afternoons - beginning from this Friday, December 2.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Jim Long, says the city centre is the perfect place for Christmas shopping and that Limerick City Council wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to spend time in the city.

“We have been accused in the past of not listening to our traders and business community and now it is up to the people to come into the city,” he said adding that the city centre is the place to be during the festive season. “With a wonderful display of festive lights and the perfect mix of traditional and new businesses, you can’t beat Limerick city centre for shopping this Christmas”.

However, Mayor Long is appealing to those people who work in city centre business not to abuse the free on-street car parking spaces.

“I would appeal to the staff of city centre businesses not to use these spaces; Allow people to come in and avail of the free parking and they will spend a few quid,” he said.
