SHANNON Airport has teamed up with Sunway Holidays to put Turkey back on the menu for Limerick holidaymakers this summer.

Weekly charters to Izmir will provide ease of access for those heading to popular resorts such as Kusadasi and the ancient city of Ephesus.

Last year, Turkish operator Wings Abroad blamed low demand for its decision to cancel seasonal charter flights from Shannon to Bodrum.

But Shannon is confident the new Izmir link – which will operate from May 23 to September 19 – will prove a success and add up to 6,000 extra passengers through the airport in 2015.

Shannon Group CEO Neil Pakey said Kusadasi and environs offered “the best of beaches, old city walls and great arts and culture, perfect for couples and families. This news represents a positive start to 2015 and broadens summer sun options again for Shannon passengers.”

And Declan Power, head of aviation development, said “we will be working with Sunway over the coming months to grow and develop this (charter) business for future years”.

Sunway is the largest tour operator to Turkey from Ireland. And managing director Tanya Airey, said the company was “delighted to reintroduce the many wonders of Turkey to the west of Ireland”.
