PLASSEY firm Cook Medical has opened a new European distribution centre in Germany.

PLASSEY firm Cook Medical has opened a new European distribution centre in Germany.

The company’s base in Limerick has managed the site-choice, construction and operations of the new centre, which will see it deliver across Europe.

The largest family-owned firm in the world, Cook Medical employs close to 700 people here.

Earlier this year, it secured €16.5m in funding to establish a state-of-the-art research and development laboratory in Plassey.

Its new centre is based in Baesweiller, close to Cologne.

The grand opening last Friday was attended by among others, Bill Doherty, the executive vice-president of Cook.

Speaking about the development, which has created some 60 positions, Mr Doherty said: “Baesweiler is an ideal location for our European distribution centre as we continue to increase our commitment to supporting patients worldwide. Our Limerick facility and plant in Denmark have grown rapidly over the past number of years and it was therefore logical to reduce warehouse space in these locations and move to a centralised purpose-built distribution centre at the heart of Europe. This is an important step in achieving our aim to enhance patient care, both with our medical solutions and our streamlined distribution network.”

The employees in Germany will be responsible for storing, picking, packing, shipping, returning and labelling medical devices.
