DYNAMIC Limerick city eaterie Canteen has joined the ranks of the 100 Best Irish Restaurants for 2014.
The Mallow Street restaurant is a new inclusion - along with the 1826 restaurant in Adare - on the McKennas’ Guides 100 Best Restaurants 2014.
Retained from last year are La Cucina in Castletroy and Adare’s The Wild Geese.
Canteen was opened in July 2012 by Paul Williams, who formerly worked in the Fat Duck with top UK chef Heston Blumenthal.
Food writer John McKenna paid tribute to Canteen and Williams, whom he said was “doing something really smart and special, so ignore the shoebox habitat and focus on the dynamic, delicious cooking”.
“The daytime menu features lunch boxes with Organic lamb meatballs, the lamb coming from Tipperary’s brilliant Sheep Walk Farm.
“There is gobi vegetable curry, a Burren smoked mackerel salad and the best pulled pork wrap we have ever eaten,” added McKenna in one of the country’s foremost restaurant guides.
The guides are now available in ‘Smart Guides’ form from the Apple Store or Google Play, with an “easy to navigate interactive functionality” according to Sally McKenna.
