AN average of just over 14,000 vehicles are using the Limerick Tunnel every day, according to the latest official figures.
Although this is less than had been predicted, the figures for January to June of this year show the number of vehicles using the tunnel is continuing to increase - albeit slowly.
An average of 12,227 travelled through the Limerick Tunnel each day during January but that figure rose to an average of 15,402 during June.
Vincent Murray, senior executive engineer with Limerick City Council, said this trend encouraging.
“More and more people are using it,” he said adding that the Tunnel, which opened over a year ago, can accommodate up to 40,000 vehicles a day.
Around 6.5 per cent of vehicles using the Limerick Tunnel are classified as Heavy Goods Vehicles, which is slightly less than the average for other national roads in Limerick.
