THEY are well known as being among the best chips not only in Limerick, but in Ireland – and now the legendary chipper Donkey Ford’s has been added to a bucket list of places to ‘eat before you die’.

The unassuming, family run John Street chipper was awarded top of website Ireland Before You Die’s list of “23 Best places in Ireland to have Fish and Chips before you die”.

“This place doesn’t look it would be any good from the outside, however, this place serves fantastic chips that are to die for,” says the entry on the website about Donkey Ford’s.

The chipper was last year voted the Best Chipper in Ireland after a public vote hosted by Today FM’s KC Show and has a universal appeal.

It has famously held its prices at a steady level for years and is continuously acclaimed for its fresh fish and chips, one of many excellent such establishments that are located in the Limerick city area.

Fantasy author Darren Shan has previously hailed it as “one of my favourite places” in Limerick.

“One of my favourite places to go is Donkey Ford’s; a fish and chip shop that’s cheap and cheerful. I’ve had a lot of good feeds there,” he said in an interview last year.

Steve Ryan, front man of Limerick band Windings and ex of Giveamanakick, has also proclaimed Donkey’s as his “favourite chipper”.

“It was practically a part of my childhood - bringing home chips on a Saturday evening,” he said several years ago of the city institution.
