LIMERICK Leader reader Justin Sherin is used to being right up to date with the local news – but he took a trip back in time last week and loved reading all about it.

Justin, who has just moved into his new home in High Road, Thomondgate, was pulling up some old carpet when he found he had unearthed some 60-year-old editions of the Leader, in almost perfect condition.

More than a dozen front pages, dating back to March 1955, were scattered along the room, which were placed under two layers of carpet, two layers of lino and another layer of carpet.

Justin’s friend Pat O’Neill, who is helping him with the move, said that he believes they were placed strategically to prevent any cold drafts from entering the room.

Justin said that he enjoyed reading the front pages of his historical find.

“The front page [of the Leader] shows the committee of the Shannon Rowing Club, my great rowing rivals – I am St Michael’s Rowing Club. And 1955 was also the year of my birth.”

Justin was lucky to find some local news on our front page – until the early 1950s, it was entirely reserved for advertisements!
