AROUND 30 jobs have been lost after Ivan’s general store in Caherdavin closed after almost 40 years of trading.
Staff were called in last night and told by owner Ivan Cremin that due to tough trading conditions, the business would close.
A notice placed on the window this morning states: “Unfortunately after 38 years of business, we have been forced to close Ivan’s shop. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge you all for your support and continued loyalty in these hard economic times over the last few years.”
Local Fianna Fail election candidate Joe Crowley said he is “absolutely devastated” by the news.
“It is quite a big store, it has a canteen upstairs, and supplies a lot of catering events. Ivan’s was a big local employer, so this is a big blow to the area. I would know Ivan [Cremin] personally and I am very sorry for him,” he said.
The adjacent Post Office remains open for business as usual.
There is further bad news, as Lifestyle Sports has closed its branch in Arthur’s Quay shopping centre.
