MULTI-MILLIONAIRE businessman and philanthropist JP McManus donated in excess of €2.3m to charities throughout the country last year.

The latest accounts filed with the Companies Registration Office show that a total of €2,384,891 was awarded last year to some 154 local and national organisations, after pleas for funding from 228 charitable bodies were examined by the board.

Accounts for the JP McManus Charitable Foundation Ltd show that Mr McManus, who does not sit on the board, made a personal donation of over €530,000 to the foundation last year.

The foundation has access to unrestricted funds of over €38m, according to the value of the stocks and assets of December 31, 2012, through listed investments, unquoted investments and portfolio deposits. The market value of these investments rose by more than €2m from January to December 2012.

McManus’ wife Noreen, daughter Sue-Ann Foley, and long running associates Declan Moylan (senior) and P Gerard Boland sit on the board. In 2011, the foundation gave €4.8m to charities, and since it was established in 2001 It has donated more than €54m.
