SHANNON Development has announced details of a new route development fund for Shannon Airport that it hopes will bring an additional 150,000 visitors into the region next year on new scheduled and charter services.

Believed to be starting out at somewhere in the region of €1 million, Shannon Development will be contributing directly to the rolling fund as well as other stakeholders in the public and private sectors.

Agency chief executive Dr Vincent Cunnane announced the initiative at the Bunratty Castle Hotel, where Shannon Development hosted a briefing for over 100 industry players ahead of the 2012 tourism season.

“The idea of the fund is to help the airport to win new business in what is a very competitive market for new airlines and sustainable new routes, It’s clear that the region has to get behind the airport more. It is the key economic driver of the region and we need it to be operating as effectively as possible,” said Dr Cunnane.

Money was already in place and Dr Cunnane said he was awaiting further commitment from industry as the idea “captures the imagination”.

New routes into continental Europe, particularly connecting hubs, were a priority of the fund, as well as bolstering transatlantic business.
